Tutorial: 40' to understand the UK SORA risk assessment methodology

Updated: 8 hours ago

SORA stands for Specific Operations Risk Assessment. It’s a structured safety assessment method that helps operators demonstrate that their drone operations are safe.

The UK SORA will enter into force on 23 April 2025. On that date, it will be an Accepted Means of Compliance, proposed by the CAA, to comply with the well-known article 11 under UK Regulation (EU) 2019/947 called Rules for conducting on operational risk assessment.

UK SORA is based on the SORA framework developed by JARUS—the Joint Authorities for Rulemaking of Unmanned Systems. JARUS brings together experts from 60+ countries, including the CAA, EASA, and FAA. A number of countries are currently following the JARUS SORA version v2.0. UK SORA is based on the latest JARUS SORA version 2.5.

40 minute video that will save you a lot of time understanding how it works

This tutorial is designed for everyone, including those with little or no prior knowledge of the topic. We’ll break down what UK SORA means, for drone operators and UAS manufacturers — whether you fly commercially or are exploring genuine Beyond Visual Line of Sight operations.

Hopefully this will help demystify the process and show you what is achievable and what's the right approach.
